Countermeasure
handmade portfolio
2019

A broadside print in the Union Art Gallery show "Turning Pages: Social Justice in Book Art". The print is a part of a portfolio titled "Countermeasure", which has prints made by several artists.
My print sheds light on Korean comfort women, girls and women who were victims of sexual slavery by the Japanese military during WW2. The imagery is borrowed from symbols used in the "comfort women" movement. The Butterfly Fund started by Kim Bok-dong and Gil Won-ok uses a yellow butterfly symbol, while the empty chair and shoes are a part of the Statue of Peace (Statue of Girl 평화의 소녀상).
The poem used is by Emily Jungmin Yoon from her book "A Cruelty Special to Our Species".
